This effect shows Sanjuro’s outlook in the world and how he feels about it. Furthermore, with the addition of the eerie sound of leaves, it all provides a somber mood exemplifying Sanjuro’s gloom and his sense of not fitting in. The use of battle imagery of such a ghastly scene invokes Kurosawa’s skillful use of pathos to captivate the audience further.
